What's happening in Sunday School

2011 - 2012

December 4, 2011
Today’s Sunday School lesson is the foretelling of the birth of John the Baptist Luke (1:5–25). The children learned that God in His mercy promised to send John to prepare sinful people for the coming of the Lord. In His Word, God calls us (sinful people) to repentance, declaring us righteous because of His Son, Jesus. In your family discussions, ask the children to retell the story they learned. Talk about times when you have doubted God’s Word and how because of Jesus, God forgives our doubts, granting us faith to believe through the power of the Holy Spirit.

December 11, 2011
As we observe this Second Sunday in Advent, Sunday School students studied the story “An Angel Visits Mary.” In the womb of Mary, Jesus, the Son of God, became a man so that we sinful people might become adopted children of God and share in the inheritance of heaven. Parents might ask, “How does God make us His children? What do we inherit as God’s children?”

December 18, 2011
Today in Sunday School we studied “An Angel Visits Joseph.” Just as the angel proclaimed to Joseph that Mary would bear an infant who is the Son of God, the Savior, so God proclaimed to us in His Word that this same Jesus is our Savior from sin and death. Parents could ask, “What important message did the angel give Joseph? What important message do we hear in God’s Word?”

December 25, 2011
The birth of Jesus serves as the focus of the Sunday School lesson for today. The Son of God became what we are, human, to make us what He is, a child of the heavenly Father. Consider discussing, “Why is it important that Jesus became a human like you and I? Why is it important that Jesus was both God and man?”

January 1, 2012
On this First Sunday after Christmas, the Sunday School lesson focuses on “The Presentation of Jesus.” In the Divine Service, we join with Simeon and Anna, the angels and archangels, and the great cloud of witnesses in heaven and on earth hailing Christ as the fulfiller of the Law. Parents might ask, “Where do we sing our praises to God? How has Christ fulfilled the Law for us?”

January 8, 2012
The Baptism and temptation of Jesus serve as the lesson focus for Sunday School this week. Jesus is baptized into and takes on our sin, and faces our temptations so we, in Baptism, would receive His goodness, His holiness, and His purity. Parents could ask, “Why is it important that Jesus was baptized? Why is it important that we are baptized?”

January 15, 2012
Today in Sunday School we study the calling of Jesus’ first disciples with “Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael.” In Jesus, access to heaven is given to all who believe. You might discuss, “How did Philip and Nathanael know that Jesus was the Christ? How do we learn that Jesus is the Christ?”

January 22, 2012
In Sunday School today students learned the story “Jesus Calls Matthew.” We sinners rejoice, for we, too, have been called from our own pigsty of sin to dine with Jesus around His table, and to be a friend of the friend of sinners. Consider discussing, “How did Jesus call Matthew to be one of His followers? How and why does Jesus call us to follow Him?”

January 29, 2012
The Sunday School lesson for this week focuses on the story of “Jesus and the Little Children.” In our sin, we are like small children: helpless, dependent, and needy. So Jesus came to bestow His love and eternal gifts upon us. Parents could discuss, “How did Jesus show His compassion on these little children? How does Jesus shower His compassion on us?”

February 5, 2012
“Jesus Heals a Man Who Is Paralyzed” is the lesson for Sunday School today. The miracle of healing the paralytic confirms that Jesus, the Son of Man, has authority on earth to forgive sins and it confirms what the Son of Man chiefly came to do: deliver us and all believers from sin, death, and the power of the devil. Consider discussing, “In addition to healing the paralyzed man, what else does Jesus tell him? How has Jesus healed us from our sickness of sin?”

February 12, 2012
The story “Jesus Heals Jairus’s Daughter” serves as the focus of Sunday School today. Just as Jesus by Word and touch raised the dead girl to life, so by His Word and Sacraments, He kills and buries death and raises us to eternal life. Questions for discussion include, “How did Jesus heal this little girl? How does Jesus heal us from the sickness of sin?”

February 19, 2012
On this Transfiguration Sunday, the Sunday School students have studied the story of “The Transfiguration.” In the Transfiguration, we see Jesus as the pure and holy Son of God, whose perfect righteousness is given to us through God’s Word and Sacraments. Parents could ask, “What did Jesus reveal to His disciples about Himself in the Transfiguration? What does God’s Word reveal to us about Jesus?”

February 26, 2012
As we begin the season of Lent, the Sunday School students study the account “Jesus Calms a Storm.” Just as Jesus calmed the storm with His Word for the frightened disciples, so He calms and ends the storm of sin and death by taking our sin upon Himself and dying in our place so we may live eternally. Consider discussing, “What did Jesus do to calm the storm? How does Jesus calm the storms in our life?”

Earlier lessons

September 4, 2011

Today’s Sunday School lesson is about Jacob and his family from Genesis 29:1–30:24. The children will learn that through Jacob’s family God brought forth the Savior, Jesus Christ, who endured lies, deception, and the schemes of sinful humankind to work our salvation on the cross. Families can discuss how we sin when we lie or deceive others and how such actions show that we don’t trust God to provide and care for us. Ask your children if they have ever suffered because of someone’s lies. Talk about how Jesus suffered and died for us on the cross. Talk about the first commandment and how it relates to this Bible story.

September 11, 2011

Esau forgives Jacob (Genesis 31:3; 32–33) is the Bible story taught today in Sunday School. This exciting account teaches us how Jacob struggled against man and God for his birthright. The children will learn that Jesus struggled against sin and death to win our heavenly birthright. Talk to your children about sin and how it breaks families and relationships. Discuss how sin severed our relationship with God, how through Jesus we are restored to God eternally, and how Jesus helps us as God’s children to restore our broken human relationships.

September 18, 2011

For the next few weeks in Sunday School, the children will be learning the wonderful, true, story of Joseph. It begins today with the account of jealous brothers selling Joseph into slavery (Genesis 37). Though the brothers didn’t know it, God would use their treachery to bring about His plan to deliver His people and ultimately to deliver us from sin and death through Jesus. A family discussion might focus on how hatred and unkind thoughts are sins that can lead us to hateful words and actions, as they did for Joseph’s brothers. Your children may identify with the brothers and also with Joseph. Help them to see that though we suffer from our own hateful acts as well as the unkindness of others, on the cross, Jesus saved us from the hurt and harm of our own sins and the sins of others.

September 25, 2011

Today in Sunday School, the children will learn how God used Joseph to feed Egypt during a great famine (Genesis 40–41). God sent His Son, Jesus, to save all humanity from sin, death, and the devil. Talk to your children about how our sins cause suffering for both ourselves and others. Talk about times when sin overwhelms us and we cannot escape it. In His love, God takes care of our needs, physical and spiritual. On the cross, Jesus bore God’s anger for our sins and endured the suffering that we deserve. Discuss the reality that in spite of how awful life seems, Jesus is with us through His Word and Sacraments, caring for us always. The first article of the Apostles’ Creed and its explanation is a helpful catechism connection

October 9, 2011

Today in Sunday School, the children will complete their study of how God used and worked in Joseph’s life. In Genesis 42–45 and 51:15–21, Joseph reveals himself to his brothers and forgives them, telling them that though they meant evil, God used their acts for good. Our Lord Jesus Christ reveals Himself to us and forgives us in His holy Word and Sacraments. Families should review and discuss how God was with Joseph, blessing him through all that happened, the good and the bad. Talk about how God has turned bad or evil things in your life or world into blessings for your good.

October 16, 2011

The Sunday School lesson today begins a series of lessons about Moses. Today’s lesson (Exodus 1:1–2:10) is about the birth of Moses. The children will learn that God was with Moses, caring for him and protecting him. God saved His people through Moses, who lead them out of slavery. Where is Christ in this lesson? God in Christ saves all people from the bondage of sin and death. Family discussions might touch on how God loves and cares for us (First Article of the Creed) and how God delivers us from evil (Lords’ Prayer, Seventh Petition).

October 23, 2011

Today in Sunday School, the lesson recalls the wonderful account of Moses and the burning bush (Exodus 2:11–4:31). Just as God had Moses remove the sandals from his feet, God in Christ removes our sins from us, making us fit to approach God and stand in His presence. Talk with your child about who makes us holy before God. Ask him or her to tell you the story about Moses and the burning bush. What did Moses have to do, and why, in order to be in God’s presence? Review the Third Commandment and its meaning from the catechism.

October 30, 2011

Today’s Sunday School lesson is one every young boy remembers vividly; the story of Moses and the plagues on Egypt (Exodus 5–10). Through a series of horrific plagues, God punished the Egyptians for their sinful treatment of His people and freed His people from bondage. Through His horrific suffering and death on the cross, Jesus took the punishment for our sin and freed us from sin’s bondage. Talk with your children about what it means to be freed from the slavery of sin. Ask them to tell you about the plagues and talk about the power of God Almighty.

November 6, 2011

In Sunday School today, the children will learn the account of the Passover, Exodus 11–12. This true story, about the night when the angel of death passed over the homes of God’s people who had painted their doors with the blood of a lamb, foreshadows Christ, God’s Son, who became the Lamb whose blood was shed for us. Jesus is our Passover Lamb, and thus we will never die—we have the gift of eternal life. Ask your children who gives us the faith to believe that Jesus is our Savior?

November 13, 2011

Today in Sunday School, the children will learn about how God saved the Hebrews by parting the waters of the Red Sea and how God saves us through the washing of water in Holy Baptism. Exodus 13:17–15:21. Ask your children to tell you what they know about this story. Talk about how God fights for us and saves us from sin, death, and the devil. Talk about Baptism and how water combined with God’s Word washes you clean from sin and gives you eternal life.

November 20, 2011

Manna, water, and quail (Exodus 16–17) is the Sunday School lesson for today. Just as God provided manna, water, and quail for the hungry and complaining Israelites to preserve them, in Christ, God feeds us with the manna of His Word and the water of forgiveness, satisfying our eternal hunger and quenching our eternal thirst. Talk to your children about how sin causes us to be lost and hungry and thirsty for what we cannot have. Speak of Jesus, the bread of life and the living water, and how He satisfies our spiritual hunger and thirst. Review together the Fourth Petition of the Lord’s Prayer.

November 27, 2011

The account of God’s giving of the Ten Commandments to Moses is today’s Sunday School lesson (Exodus 19–20). The children will learn that “the law was given through Moses” but “grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” (John 1:17). Talk about God’s laws and how they guide us and show us our sin when we cannot keep them. Ask your children, “Who kept the Law perfectly for us?” Though we sin much, daily we have God’s forgiveness because of Christ, His Son. As a family, review the Ten Commandments.
